1. What SafiFood does
SafiFood helps households decide what to do with their food. It:
- estimates how many days a food item stays safe, based on what you tell us and the local weather, and explains why;
- sends uncertain or possibly unsafe results to a community health worker for review;
- suggests ways to preserve food that is close to spoiling;
- lets you offer surplus food to your community and claim food others offer; and
- records fingerprints of key events on a public ledger so they can be checked later.
SafiFood is free to use. Your mobile network's normal data charges apply.
2. Not a guarantee of food safety
Predictions come from a statistical model trained on published food-storage guidelines. They are estimates and can be wrong, for example if the information entered is inaccurate or the food was contaminated in a way the model cannot know. Health-worker reviews are guidance from community volunteers and staff, not a laboratory test or medical advice.
You are responsible for deciding whether to eat, preserve, share or throw away any food. If you or someone you care for feels unwell after eating, seek medical help.
3. Your account
- Give accurate information and keep your sign-in details safe. You are responsible for activity in your account.
- You should be 18 or older, or use SafiFood with a parent or guardian.
- Roles such as community health worker or admin are assigned by SafiFood admins and may be removed at any time.
4. Sharing food with your community
- Only offer food that you believe is safe and that you are free to give away. Describe it honestly and use real photos.
- Listings are reviewed before they appear, but SafiFood does not inspect, handle or deliver food and is not a party to any exchange.
- Shared food is free. Do not use SafiFood to sell food or to arrange payments.
- Take normal care when meeting other people to hand over food.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- post false, misleading, offensive or illegal content, or photos of other people without their permission;
- harass other users or health workers;
- try to access other people's data, get around access controls, or disrupt the service; or
- use automated tools to send large numbers of requests.
We may remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules.
6. Your content
You keep ownership of the photos and information you add. You allow SafiFood to store and display them as needed to run the service (for example, showing a listing photo to neighbours and health workers) and to use de-identified records to improve prediction accuracy. How we handle personal data is described in our Privacy Policy.
7. Chat channels
If you use SafiFood on WhatsApp or Telegram, those apps' own terms also apply. You can stop chat notifications at any time by sending STOP or changing your settings.
8. Availability and changes
SafiFood started as a university research project and is still evolving. We may change, pause or end features, and the service may sometimes be unavailable. Public ledger records currently use the Hedera test network.
9. Limitation of liability
SafiFood is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, SafiFood and its developers are not liable for any illness, loss or damage arising from decisions made using the service, from food shared between users, or from the service being unavailable. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that cannot be excluded by law.
10. Ending your use
You can stop using SafiFood at any time and ask us to delete your account by emailing support@safifood.space. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms.
11. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a meaningful way, we will update the date above and ask you to agree again before you continue using the app.
12. Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya. Questions? Email support@safifood.space.
